Insurance Agents often brag about their company's Financial Strength Rating (FSR) when they are A++. They should. BUT there are over 100 life insurance companies that are also rated A+. An A+ insurance company is only one notch below A++. The point is that there is lot of A+ rated carriers.

Answer: An A++ is slightly better than an A+. AM Best considers both an A+ and an A++ to be "Superior." There really is little public information available as to what they consider to be the exact difference.
Question: Are all of these insurers available in my state?
No - not at all. Not all life insurance companies do business in all states. In fact many on here are actually state specific.
Question: Why are some life insurers listed on here under two almost identical names?
Because to varying extents and degrees they are set up either as different corporations or operating entities. This is done for a number of reasons including, but not limited to: governance and fail safe controls.
Question: Does it make sense to only consider A++ life insurers?
While shopping for A++ life insurers sounds like it makes good sense it really depends on your given situation and what you are looking to buy. If you are procuring a whole life insurance policy, the A++ rating should probably matter more. However if you are shopping for a term policy - I fail to see, statistically speaking why you should limit yourself to only A++ carriers and not consider A+ carriers. Many of the A+ insurers on this list are more open to underwriting various health issues, such as Asthma, and Sleep Apnea and this may really be able to help you save money.
